Losing all your upper teeth is more than a cosmetic concern — it affects how you eat, speak, and feel about yourself. For decades, dentists around the world have used different approaches to restore a completely toothless upper jaw, but there was never a single, unified set of guidelines that the global dental community agreed upon. That changed in 2026.
Dr. B. Srinivas Rao was among a select panel of international implant specialists invited to contribute to the 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines (GCCG) in Implant Dentistry. The result was a landmark consensus report published in Clinical Oral Implants Research, one of the most respected peer-reviewed journals in the field.
This is the first time such a unified global effort has been undertaken for the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla using dental implants — making it a truly historic milestone in the field.
Conventional complete dentures — the traditional removable option that rests on the gum tissue. While affordable and non-surgical, conventional dentures can be unstable in the upper jaw and may affect confidence and eating ability over time.
Implant overdentures — removable prostheses that clip onto two or more dental implants for significantly improved stability and retention. Patients can still remove them for cleaning, but they stay firm during eating and speaking.
Implant-supported fixed dental prostheses — permanent, non-removable teeth entirely supported by dental implants. This is the closest option to having natural teeth again and is considered the gold standard for patients with adequate bone support.
The consensus panel evaluated the clinical evidence for each approach and developed practical decision-making frameworks that help clinicians determine the most appropriate treatment based on each patient's bone condition, overall health, functional requirements, and aesthetic expectations.
This means your treatment follows internationally agreed-upon best practices, whether you receive a conventional denture, an implant-supported overdenture, or a full-arch fixed prosthesis.
